What is California Proposition 65?
California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, commonly known as Proposition 65 (Prop 65), requires businesses to provide warnings to California consumers about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
Proposition 65 requires the state to maintain and update a list of chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity. The list contains over 900 chemicals found in many everyday consumer products, hardware, components, and synthetic materials.
Why do we place this warning on our products and website?
At RISE Shade Lab, customer safety, regulatory compliance, and transparency are top priorities. Even when products satisfy all federal safety standards, Prop 65 testing thresholds are extraordinarily strict—often significantly lower than federal safety guidelines.
Because our window treatments utilize high-performance fabrics, synthetic coatings, precision metal hardware, and electronic motorization assemblies, trace amounts of listed chemicals may be present in certain raw materials or component hardware.
Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure full compliance with California law, we provide this warning across our online catalog and product shipments to inform our customers prior to purchase.
Does a Prop 65 warning mean a product is unsafe?
Not necessarily. A Proposition 65 warning does not automatically mean that a product violates any safety standards or is inherently dangerous. The warning is simply a notification requirement under California law to ensure consumers have the information needed to make informed purchasing decisions.
